Significant improvement of environmental footprint of paper sacks

the European kraft paper and paper sack industry has put further efforts into improving its carbon footprint. In only three years, between 2015 and 2018, the carbon intensity of a single paper sack was reduced by 8%. This is concluded by the latest carbon footprint analysis on European paper sacks conducted by the Swedish research institute RISE on behalf of the European Paper Sack Research Group (ESG), a collaboration between EUROSAC and CEPI Eurokraft.

Despite the intrusion of coronavirus into the consumer psyche in 2020, packaging materials companies and value chains have been working incredibly hard on solutions for a circular economy. By volume, flexible packaging represents the majority of packaging used worldwide, and yet historically has had lower recycling rates and capabilities. Graham Houlder, CEFLEX project coordinator, and Liz Morrish, CEFLEX workstream consultant and Design for a Circular Economy (D4ACE) lead, discuss the new guidelines developed and how they will help the flexible packaging industry achieve a circular future.

Nevertheless, global plastic production is still increasing,1 and is set to double over the next ten to 15 years.2 The steps being taken by companies and governments are a far cry from the action necessary to tackle a crisis of this magnitude.This report focuses on the actions and responsibilities of four of the world’s biggest plastic polluters: Coca- Cola, Nestlé, PepsiCo and Unilever.3 At the time of writing these companies continue to sell billions of products in single-use bottles, sachets and packets in developing countries.4 And they do this despite knowing that: 1) waste isn’t properly managed in these contexts; 2) their packaging therefore becomes pollution; and 3) such pollution causes serious harm to the environment and people’s health.
