One of Africa's largest manufacturers and converters of flexible packaging materials recently extended its commitment to Valmet's converting technology, with a €3M investment. Veepee Industries, of Nigeria, ordered a new Rotomec 4000-2 gravure press with electronic shaft technology and two Titan SR7 slitter rewinders for its plant near Lagos.

Rohm and Haas has acquired the flexible packaging adhesives business of Technical Coatings, a subsidiary of Benjamin Moore & Co, of New Jersey. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Spain's Comexi Group has expanded into North America by acquiring Agawam, Massachusetts, based flexo press manufacturer Kidder for an undisclosed sum. It says the investment will "utilize and complement the strengths and product lines of both companies and ensure unparalleled service".

New Zealand based Pacific Inks has opened a new water based ink plant in the UK. The new facility at Church Gresley is expected to develop into a state-of-the-art plant to handle growing business in the UK and exports to mainland Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Converting at Papex

Biodegradable coating alternative

A new coating method allows biodegradable plastics to adhere to paperboard, enabling the creation of biopolymer coated packaging suitable for serial production. The technology has been developed in co-operation between Stora Enso, UPM-Kymmene and the Tampere University of Technology, with a view to developing barrier coated paper and board products and packaging solutions, and improving the recyclability of materials.

A new foam density in 3M's Cushion-Mount Plus flexo plate mounting tape range is said to allow printing of solid colours at higher speeds without bouncing, while still maintaining excellent dot control on mixed image plates. Early users have run presses with great success at speeds of 350 m/min, the company states.

Film senses pressure

US company Sensor Products has developed a sensor film that, by changing colour, reveals stress distribution and magnitude between any two surfaces that come in contact. The intensity of the resultant colour is quantifiable and enables the user to determine precisely what the PSI is at any point on the contacting surfaces.

The first installation in Asia of a CreoScitex Trendsetter VLF platesetter for the packaging industry is now operational at Shenzhen Wanda Color Printing & Packaging, in the Peoples Republic of China. The company has a 40,000m² facility and more than 800 employees. It supplies major companies in China including Qing Dao Beer, Nestle Coffee, and Legend, the country's largest computer manufacturer.
