On-press colour control

1 September 2011

The new SpectraLab spectrophotometer from AVT is claimed to make the highest quality ISO compliant colour and density measurements available on-press, and on-demand for the first time. It is said to be particularly suitable for flexo and gravure printing of flexible packaging, where consistent colour quality in repetitive images is critical.

According to AVT, SpectraLab is fully ISO compliant with true spectrophotometric measurement of the printed colours on virtually all flexible substrates. An optional add-on module to the company’s PrintVision/Jupiter and PrintVision/Argus models, it is said to be the only spectrophotometer for on-press inline measurement of absolute colour and density values of colour-critical packaging.

SpectraLab measures by sampling user-selected points anywhere on the web. These can be changed by the operator, who can also adjust target colour values and customize other key parameters, even while the press is in production. The system measures up to 15 ink colours at up to three locations per colour - and areas as small as six millimetre in diameter on clear and opaque substrates, and on both sides of the web.
