Finnish label converter Tarratuote has installed an Omet VaryFlex narrow web flexo line at its plant in Tampere. The VaryFlex marks a major change for the company, which until now has only used Nilpeter presses.
Co-owner and general manager Roope Salokanta explains: “We needed extra capacity and were looking to move from 330mm web width to 430mm, but after extensive print trials we found that the Omet’s 340mm width coupled with its speed and accuracy was the best way forward for us. We were impressed with the ease and speed of makeready compared to what we were used to, but most of all it was the Omet’s ability to run fast without loss of quality on a variety of substrates that really struck us.”
He continues: “In our opinion, the Omet has a clear advantage both in its functionality and its stability. We were able to test different finishing techniques on various weights of stock from 12 to 300 micron, and they all came out with the same high print quality even when run off at top speed. This was a whole new way of working to us.”
Of special advantage to Tarratuote is the Omet’s delam/relam facility and its ability to print on the reverse side of the web without the need for turner bars.
“Servo drive has been a revelation to us because it offers so much more control and flexibility,” he comments. “It has allowed us to work with our customers on developing new products that previously were outside our capability.”
Six months after installation, the Omet VaryFlex is in triple shift operation 5 days per week and, according to Tarratuote, it maintains consistency of dot right up to its 120m/min top speed, even when printing on the adhesive.
With this added capacity, the company is looking to supply the growing Finnish market for re-cyclable mineral water bottles that use shrink sleeve labels. Another potential growth market is light cartonboard products, including blister packs.
Omet now has five lines installed in Finland and is optimistic of securing more orders.
