Rotomec hotmelt coating line scores for ScandStick

The latest coating and siliconizing technology for high speed production of self adhesive label materials is incorporated in a new Rotomec hotmelt coating line at the ScandStick production facility in Helsingborg, Sweden. ScandStick is one of Europe’s leading producers of self adhesive filmic and paper label products and speciality materials. The new line has boosted its production and increased capacity to meet the high sales volumes in this rapidly expanding market sector.

The Rotomec line is 60m in length, with a 2.1m web width running at speeds of up to 500m/min. It is equipped with the latest advances in a number of technologies, notably for hotmelt coating - the main technology employed by ScandStick and currently the fastest growing trend in the self adhesive field.

The custom built line is equipped with automatic splice unwinders and rewinders for non stop reel change-overs at full speed, a multi roller silicone coating head, a drying tunnel featuring air flotation technology, a hotmelt adhesive coating head, and a new generation steam system for paper re-moisturizing. The line is also designed to minimize waste and change-over times.

Wider

Use of increasingly wide web widths is a recent trend. It increases the machine’s productivity through improved operating efficiency, more than running at higher speeds. The fully automatic reel loading and unloading system uses trolleys with motorized transfers.

The solventless coating head is a multi roller design. An automatic cleaning system for the coating roller prevents contamination of the substrate by dust or paper residues. Because of the high production speed, the machine also has an integrated system for extracting the silicone mist formed by breakaway particles from the lamination process.

Designed and engineered by Rotomec, the solventless silicone reticulation tunnel is of the floating type. Like most of the line, the drying system is customized for Scandstick’s applications. Air heating is by gas burner, one for each tunnel section enabling maximum flexibility in temperature control, which varies according to the specific requirements of the materials being processed, according to Rotomec. A crush cutting system based on 27 pressure knives is installed in advance of the adhesive coating group for pre-cutting the paper fibres.

In a line dedicated to the production of labels with hotmelt technology, re-moisturization is a critical factor in preventing curling of the laminated web. Re-moisturization through a steam humidifier is controlled in two ways: manually from the main console or by closed loop, with an infra red humidity detector.

A special system identifies and marks product waste that may occur from either variations in the adhesive grammage, paper defects or lack of coating. Identified by thickness gauges, such defects are automatically marked with ink splashes sprayed directly onto the processed web.

ScandStick also invested in a Titan SR8 cantilever slitter rewinder to meet the increased slitting and rewinding volumes generated by the new coating line.

Staffan Hagberg, marketing manager for the company, states: “The new Rotomec line has taken us to the next platform of technology. It gives us the increased capacity required to continue the expansion of our business in this commodity segment. It also provides the opportunity for ScandStick to make new developments in areas that were not possible before. One example is our new A4 self adhesive office product, where we have successfully developed a new permanent rubber based adhesive suitable for use in laser and inkjet printers and photocopiers.”
