Slitting all types of tapes

29 September 2006

German tape converter FFT-Schwanbeck has four CI-FS lathe slitting machines and a CI-GM log rewinder from Romanian manufacturer SC Converting Inginery to handle the diverse production in its factory at Braak. Using slitters, rewinders and punching machines, FFT manufactures a wide range of tapes and special products. It can, for example, cut rolls up to 500mm OD for technical surface coating. The company contract manufactures widths of 4-2,500mm - winding to any required length.

FFT director Philipp Schwanbeck says: “We installed the first Converting Inginery machine in 2002, and the latest one - a 400mm width FS slitter - recently. In all we have invested e300,000 in the these machines. We use them to produce all types of single and double-sided adhesive tape and selfadhesive film to customers' specifications. We also use the smaller machines to convert tissue paper and protection tapes, and the larger machines for foam tapes.” The CI-GM is a centre surface, twin-shaft exchange machine, rewinding up to 350mm OD.

“The Inginery machines handle well, and are very easy to use, he testifies. “It's especially good that they allow us to slit most products with one blade; there is no need for frequent blade changes. The LCD touchscreen is a particularly nice feature. Our operators have found it easy to learn and to use.”

He emphasizes: “It is also important that the machines are of high quality, but not expensive, and the manufacturer gives us very good service back-up. We are very happy with them overall.”

Other machines at FFT are two Herold slitters used to produce large rolls of protective films, an Inginery rotary die cutter, and some older models. The company supplies tapes for the print and graphics industries, for building and construction applications, for manufacturers of special automotive parts, and for metal processing. It also provides a converting service for suppliers to the aerospace industry. Most business is with the domestic market, plus some exports to Austria, Poland and Switzerland. FFT has 15 employes and a 1,300m2 factory.

Features of the CI-FS 350 lathe slitter at FFT include a 1,700mm roller width, cutting width range of up to 1,600mm, and a 350mm cutting diameter, on 26-77mm cores. Cutting accuracy is said to be within 0.2mm, depending on material. The main mandrel and cutter have a rotary speed range of 50-600rev/min. The machine is equipped with servomotor controlled adjustment of the knife cutting angle, which can be changed from -9 to +9 degree automatically; and the cutting mode can be set to 20 different widths on one log. Cutting speed is adjustable in three stages, and an automatic grinding system operates on both sides of the knife.

Cutting shaft and circular blade are driven by an AC motor with inverter control, which can be set to rev/min and running direction obverse/reserve. Width setting is controlled by a servo motor with ball screw and guide rails for accuracy.

All functions are operated from the LCD touch panel control, designed to be operator friendly, and job parameters can be stored in the central Mitsubishi PLC control system.

A cutting supporter holds the log roll when cutting core below 38mm ID, while an air type cutting shaft is said to ensure accuracy when the tolerance of the paper core ID is too big. This model has an obverse/reverse type frame - two machines set up face to face can be controlled by one operator for bulk production.

Other features are fully automatic top pin control, and a programmable control system with auto error detection. All electrical devices are CE compliant, as is the safety cover to protect the operator during production. The machine can communicate with Converting Inginery's computer by modem for instant checks and service.

Looking to the future, Philipp Schwanbeck reflects: “When the business has grown sufficiently, we will buy more machines from Converting Inginery. We will also look to purchase a combination slitter rewinder from them, to produce packaging, cloth and paper tapes. We want to get more into die cutting, and plan, eventually, to buy a laser die cutter for special products and kiss cutting of standard tapes.
