On June 1-4, CMM International 2009 will be held at the Donald E Stephens Convention Centre in Rosemont, Illinois

Among this year’s exhibitors, AccuWeb will feature a new digital line guide that, it says, will increase production efficiencies and improve web guiding performance. The AccuBeam3 has an auto set-up feature that automatically calibrates the optimum sensor parameters at the push of a button. It also uses an enhanced sensing algorithm that can decipher the multiple sensing options within its field of view. Operators then pre-select the guiding method, edge or line, of a printed line or pattern through an LCD screen display. In addition, the AccuBeam3 has new LEDs said to double the light intensity of previous digital line guide sensors. This improves contrast resolution of the guided material and the ability to edge guide clear film. Up to 25 job recipes can be stored. The new guide is compatible with AccuWeb’s Micro 1000 and Micro 4000 NET controllers.

Exhibits from Davis-Standard will include its new extrusion coating product range, available in three models – the 300, 450 and 750 – each one reflecting approximate line speed capabilities in metres per minute. All three can be tailored for customer specific flexible packaging applications. Other technical advances to be featured include the patented pressurised gravure head technology and high speed cast stretch film lines engineered in four, six and eight-up configurations. This includes in-line handwrap winders with 25 sec cycle times and models capable of winding 500 mm diameter rolls. Davis-Standard will also promote the Integrator C, a new single-point control system to replace obsolete CMR types. The Integrator C has the functionality of previous systems, but with additional features such as recipe management, historical data trending and alarms. It also features a new PLC drive interface, improved temperature controls and enhanced gauge control based on the age of the existing gauge system.

Doyle Systems will be exhibiting its range of inspection systems. Displays will include LandSco surface inspection lights (for visual defect detection) and Tectonic video inspection systems. Tectonic’s range features systems that monitor register and colour for both narrow and wide webs.

Faustel personnel will be available to discuss the firm’s coating, laminating, drying and web handling equipment. Product literature will be available on all types of coating heads, including cartridge coaters, die coaters, gravure and roll coaters, as well as roll support and flotation dryers, and advanced unwinding and rewinding equipment, including the patented PerfectStart and FilmMaster winding systems. The company will promote its LabMaster and MCL complete pre-engineered coating and laminating lines, and the state of the art Process Development and Technical Centre located at its headquarters in Germantown, Wisconsin.

UK based UV systems maker GEW (EC) will exhibit a 4-lamp IsoCure inert atmosphere UV curing system complete with 32 kW electronic e-Brick power supply. The system can be supplied for new equipment lines or as an upgrade for existing machines, to increase operating speeds and curing efficiency. Arc lengths from 50 cm up to 2 m are available. “With the current financial climate many companies are choosing the more economical option of upgrading existing machines with our electronic UV systems,” says Brian Wenger, president of GEW’s US operation. “This means they can run at full UV curing efficiency with all the benefits of the new technology until the time is right to invest in a new machine. We can supply both conventional UV curing or inert atmosphere nitrogen technology where there is a need to displace oxygen.”

Lever Manufacturing Corp will promote the LS-6200 heavy duty lathe slitter at the show. This machine is designed to automatically slit a wide variety of materials such as tapes, foams, felt, foils, films, rubber, gasket material, textiles, fibreglass, paper, polyester, leather and laminates on rolls with an outside diameter of up to 20 in. The LS-6200 features PLC operation with an “easy to use” colour touchscreen operator interface for the selection of all machine functions. Knife carriage movement is powered by a servo driven linear actuator with a second linear actuator controlling automatic knife angling. A servomotor powered precision lead screw is said to provide precise cutting tolerances. Additional features include automatic knife angling.

Swiss specialist in high precision coating and laminating systems Polytype Converting and Pagendarm BTT, of Germany, will be present in the same booth. Both will present their latest innovations, such as simultaneous multilayer ‘curtain coating systems’ and recently developed in-line coating heads. New winding systems designed to achieve the highest precision, quality and reliability at top speeds will also be introduced. Both standard and ‘tailor-made’ machine lines can be supplied for applications including solvent/solventless/ water based hotmelt/extrusion UV and EB curable products at production speeds from 1-1,200 m/min. Polytype has a partnership with Gloucester Engineering, to make bespoke extrusion coating and laminating lines with the latest web handling and extrusion technology.

Prime UV has introduced a new generation of UV dryers for the food packaging converter and printer. Engineered for installation on CI flexo presses running flexible films, the PerfectCure lamp system is said to guarantee complete cure of UV inks and coatings at speeds over 1,800 ft/min. It is designed to fit between colour units on a CI press, and to install over CI drums in-line after the UV varnish application.

UK manufacturer TS Converting Equipment will be exhibiting its ‘low cost’ CW600 slitter, developed as an economical alternative to its high performance machines. The 1,600 mm wide CW600 has four rewind diameter options: 250, 400, 600 and 800 mm. It offers benefits for both short and long runs, as a full set-up and change-over takes less than five minutes. It has the latest dual-direction, pneumatic differential shafts for both 76 and 152mm cores. The machine is equipped with both razor and shear slitting, auto edge guide, laser core and knife positioning, automatic tension control, lay-on rolls and the latest SSD digital AC drives. The male and female knife shaft bearing supports are removed, leaving the shafts cantilevered for knife replacement. A very short web path from the slitting section to the rewind is said to reduce any potential for web movement. TS will also have information on its range of heavy duty mill type machines, and the HM1000 range of hotmelt coaters will be on display.

New from Totani is the HK-65V side-weld automatic bag making machine. At up to 360 shots/min, it is claimed to be one of the industry’s fastest intermittent bag machines and can deliver finished bags up to 500 mm wide. It features a 3-servodrive system that controls the film feed drive, the heat sealer vertical drive, and the catching drive. Its on-board AC servo catching unit is claimed to provide outstanding bag stacking, and the on-board AC servo motor controls the vertical movement of heat-sealers, allowing sealing times to be set freely. A stack and assist system is said to make excellent stacks and eliminate or minimise skip cycles. A loss prevention feature automatically raises the hot knife at machine stop and lowers it at machine start, so there is no risk of the film being scorched by the thermal cutter. The unit’s in-line conveyor timer also needs no adjustment. An optional inverter-controlled edge trim winder is available.

Isra Vision is to demonstrate its PrintStar 100 per cent print inspection system. Machine operators are immediately warned with an alarm when defects are detected, and they are classified by customer specified type and the location of each defect is mapped. Continuous webs or sheets can be inspected. The modular system is said to inspect each printed repeat at the highest speeds with superior resolution and image quality. Isra Vision says the PrintStar is applicable to all processes regardless of web widths, production speeds, printing method or material substrate types. A Rewind Manager Option will automatically stop the rewinder at the location of a specific defect for removal. All inspection results are stored in a database and can be accessed for further analysis. The entire batch history, summary results, and statistics can be reviewed in real-time. The extensive statistics functions and the user graphics can be adapted to the user’s specific specifications.
