An update from the European Flexographic Technical Association (UK)

2006 Print Awards

Entry forms are now available for the 2006 EFTA Print Awards, which will be presented at a gala dinner at the Hilton Metropole NEC, next March 15.

The association has made a number of changes to this year's categories. The Technical Innovation Award has been split into two – one award specifically for suppliers and one for printers.

EFTA says it is looking particularly for innovations that have "assisted the flexo process in terms of increased productivity, consistency or repeatability, and submissions should reflect this".

The category Best Print Off the Shelf is repeated this year and entrants are asked to submit the proof of a sample which the EFTA team will purchase from the appropriate retail outlet – this is what will be judged.

Closing date for entries is October 21 and judging will take place on November 22-23. Entry forms can be obtained by calling EFTA on +44 (0) 1458 241455, emailing hiding@efta.co.uk, or downloading from www.efta.co.uk

Learn about Lean Manufacturing

With over 250 people now having attended its Lean Manufacturing Workshop, EFTA is organizing another course for September 27-28, to be held at the Bass Museum and Brewery, Burton Upon Trent, UK. This workshop will introduce delegates to: The principles of Value Adding Activity; Using OEE to Calculate Manufacturing Efficiency; Understanding the Seven Wastes and the Six Big Losses. It will also offer tools and techniques to improve manufacturing performance that include 5S/Can Do, Quick Change-over Techniques, and Improved Maintenance and Waste Reduction

Practical exercises are included throughout the workshop to allow delegates to better understand the benefits Lean Manufacturing can bring to their organization. At the end of the workshop, it is promised, delegates will be equipped with enough knowledge and a detailed workbook to enable them to implement these ideas in their own workplace.

Open to suppliers and printers, and taught by experienced practitioners, the course fees are £400 for EFTA members or £500 for non members, with a 10 per cent discount for companies sending more than one delegate. This course fee includes accommodation costs.

Workshop on waste minimization

With raw material prices increasing significantly, in addition to major increases in utility costs, the need for companies to minimize their waste in all forms is greater now than ever.

Recognizing companies' requirements to reduce waste, EFTA has developed a one-day Workshop on Waste Minimization. It will introduce delegates to a number of tools and techniques to help them manage a waste minimization programme and give some constructive ideas to reduce waste.

The first of these workshops will be held on November 3, in Bolton, UK, with another being held on December 5, in Burton upon Trent. The cost of attendance for each is £85 per person for EFTA members and £110 for non members.
