Easy entry into plasma

27 March 2009

During the past few years, plasma has become the new buzz in surface treatment – offering greater adhesiveness, higher stability, lower cost, efficient treatment of porous materials and, in some cases, even completely new surface properties.

While plasma technology brings about many new application possibilities, the effects vary greatly, depending on the technique, the gasses used, and the material treated. It is all a matter of finding the right mixtures of chemicals to apply to get the desired properties.

The uncertainty of exactly how plasma will work with specific materials constitutes a barrier for many manufacturers. Would it be feasible to invest in plasma equipment at the moment, or would it be wiser to wait until the technology has matured?

Now Vetaphone has addressed this problem by introducing plasma cartridges for its existing corona treaters. The Danish supplier’s new Power Plasma system requires no major investments in new equipment: it is merely a question of changing the corona cartridge with a new Power Plasma cartridge - easily and at any time.

Jan Eisby explains: “Many of our clients have expressed concerns whether to invest in plasma equipment at the moment, especially as the effects of plasma are mapped only for a small number of materials. Thus a lot of manufacturers would have to invest in the equipment just to try out if it satisfies their specific needs.”

He continues: “We developed the Power Plasma cartridge, which is fully compatible with all Vetaphone quick change cartridge corona treaters. This has significantly lowered both the cost and time to implementation, making it possible for manufacturers to make last minute decisions to invest in plasma equipment.”

The company has also developed a small scale Power Plasma treater that makes it possible for manufacturers to test material samples, various gasses and techniques at a low cost – prior to investment decisions.

That plasma treatment indeed produces spectacular results is emphasised by the case of one of Vetaphone’s clients, which was challenged by the task of coating a new, lightweight, non-woven textile.

Corona treatment was unsatisfactory, as the textile is so porous. The client wished to coat the textile only on the surface, but with corona treatment the coating went deep into the fabric. The result was both excessive use of coating and diminished properties of the fabric.

With Power Plasma treatment, it proved possible to charge only the surface of the fabric, and charge it well, reducing the amount of coating needed and lowering costs considerably.
