An affordable alternative

Heidelberg’s Bill McCudden outlines the opportunities offered by its Remarketed Equipment operation

In the current economic climate many print companies will be wondering just how they can square the circle of their need to invest in upgrading or extending their production capabilities against a background of tighter finance availability.

drupa 2008 has shown the latest innovations from the major manufacturers, but for a good many in the industry such a leap may not be feasible either for market or affordability reasons.

Consider another option: equipment which has been traded-in by a major manufacturer such as Heidelberg and is offered to the market by it. Heidelberg has a programme for doing just that. As its new generation of advanced products is taken up, another generation of equipment is coming available. This can include B1 10 and 12-colour machines that could permit those printers who have been considering taking this route but who have not yet invested, to do precisely that.

Simply because Heidelberg introduced its XL 105 long perfectors at drupa 2008 need not mean that the technology gap faced by those printers who have not yet moved into five-back-five or six-back-six work has become even wider. Quite the reverse: that gap has become smaller for those companies willing to invest in a recent, but not brand new, 10 or 12-colour machine.

The same applies to the B2 sector, where some printers who took the decision at drupa to install Heidelberg’s latest XL 75 will be trading in their still highly specified and highly performing CD 74 equipment over the coming months.

Any machine remarketed by Heidelberg will have been thoroughly prepared for its new owner. Buying from the manufacturer also has the advantage that the machine’s history is known: so any necessary renovation work will be identified in advance and carried out before re-installation. Buying direct provides the reassurance that only skilled, factory trained experts get to work on the machine and only genuine replacement parts are used.

Finance, too, is more readily available. Any machine remarketed directly by Heidelberg, for example, comes with full service cover.

In short, while current times may be challenging, and may make some in the sector hesitant about investing immediately in brand new kit, they also provide a real opportunity for others to make a significant move forward with their technology.
