Flexing business muscles for the future

1 December 2009

Flexo has been the most dynamic print process in terms of technology development and improvement over the past 10 years. Around 90% of all printed corrugated packaging, and over 70% of flexible packaging is flexo printed. In addition, the vast majority of labels have flexo print on them.

There have been quantum leaps in terms of quality and consistency, which can be seen in the winning prints in the EFTA Print Award competition. The flexo process is demonstrably capable of producing excellent quality. What is important now is that, as an industry, the most is made of the equipment invested. What that means is running it as effectively as possible by minimising downtime and waste, and the EFTA will be focused on helping the industry achieve efficiency improvements over the next 12 months.

Converting Today is working closely in partnership with the EFTA this year to inform readers of the many benefits the organisation has to offer. Lesley Hide, director of the EFTA, has a deep knowledge of the flexo industry, and its challenges – both technical and economical – and is keen to share this extensive knowledge with members via its website, and Converting Today in print and online.

In the January 2010 issue of the magazine, we will have an extended feature on Flexo, examining the latest technologies and applications for this type of printing. Starting in January, we will also be featuring a regular column by Lesley, who will act as an ‘agony aunt’ for the flexo industry. If you are involved in the industry, and have some issues, challenges, or particularly sticky problems you would like answered, then send them to me: maureenbyrne@globaltrademedia.com and I will pass them on to Lesley to address in her column.

If you are not a member of the EFTA yet, I would urge you to join. The association has over 300 members, and has established an unrivalled programme of training, seminars, conferences, awards and exhibitions. The EFTA Academy is an excellent training ground for both novices and more seasoned employees. Even if you have been in the industry for a number of years, it’s surprising how much more you can learn. As Kevin Doley, of Bischof & Klein, puts it: “I have been printing for 17 years and like most people I think I know it all, so it came as a bit of a surprise when I took some of the quizzes and realised my theory knowledge wasn’t quite as good as I thought!”
