Paperboard packaging producer Stora Enso is co-operating with HP to develop a digital package printing system, scheduled for commercial availability in late 2013. Its new Stora Enso Lakka B2 coater will integrate in-line with the HP Indigo 30000 digital press - a 750 mm wide sheet-fed machine designed specifically to print paperboard packaging.
Aimed at the folding carton market,.the new 750 x 530mm HP Indigo press can print any board up to 600 micron thick. Its seven colour stations, interchangeable between 4, 5, 6 and 7-colour process inks, white ink, special and spot inks allows accurate reproduction of most of the Pantone gamut and official brand colours.
Stora Enso’s Lakka coater will offer a modular approach to meet the requirements of various application areas. It will process B2-sized sheets and use aqueous or UV coating for high quality folding cartons from 180 to 500g/m². It will be available as a module of the integrated production line or as a stand-alone system in late 2013.
The partner companies say the integrated production line will offer a digital solution to folding carton converters, “which fits naturally into their current production environments, with a printed and coated output similar to a packaging offset press”. Stora Enso expects to begin shipping the first beta units by summer 2013.
This year, HP and Stora Enso will also be offering an offline system consisting of the new smaller-format HP Indigo 5600 and 7600 sheet-fed presses and Stora Enso's new Enso Pinta smaller-format coater.
