Xeikon in souper show

28 September 2007

The Punch Graphix exhibit at Labelexpo is modelled on a factory, using its Xeikon 330 digital label press to produce personalized soup can labels for visitors, demonstrating the capabilities of the press. Visitors to the stand can create their own label, including their picture, name and preferred flavour. A full production run of labels then takes place towards the end of each day, when visitors can return to collect their label.

The soup factory theme has also been transferred to the web, where full details of Xeikon’s Labelexpo activity are placed at www.mysoupfactory.com – and Punch Graphix will add mock TV commercials starring the can labels.

As well as being fun, visiting “MySoupFactory” shows how a digital workflow operates. DigiQuote from TimeHarvast instantly calculates the cost of a job and determines the economical efficiency of printing the job digitally on the Xeikon 330. With software from EskoArtwork, the job is designed in different versions, preflighted, and can even accommodate last minute changes.

Deixis has tools to compose the job from different input channels: for “MySoupFactory” the job designed by the products of EskoArtwork and is combined with variable data consisting of a photo portrait and personal registration data from a website. Deixis will compose the print job using all of this data together with a pre-selected version of the soup label. The Xeikon X-800 will then RIP the job, calculate the imposition scheme (using step and repeat) and track accounting and other information. The labels are then printed with the Xeikon 330.

The web-fed press will print on labelstock, paper and synthetic media in widths up to 330mm and weights up to 250g/m2, in up to five colours, including opaque white. Top speed is 14.7m/min. In-line post press equipment is available for varnishing, laminating, cutting, slitting, matrix stripping and re-reeling the finished printed product.
