Xaar in nanoparticle printing co-operation

6 June 2006

An inkjet deposition printing system for silver nanoparticles has been introduced jointly by iTi, Xaar and Cima NanoTech for the electronics industry. The system is said to be ideal for the development of new production processes for products such as RFID tags, flat panel displays, PCB’s, fuel cells and electronic components. It combines Xaar’s OmniDot piezoelectric inkjet technology with iTi’s XY Materials Deposition System (XYMDS), and Cima NanoTech’s proprietary nanomaterial ink technologies.

The new system supports up to four of Xaar’s OmniDot 380/40 printheads and uses a dedicated Delta XO/760 inkjet drive engine. This includes the drive electronics, ink supply system and user interface necessary to control the printheads. Based on Xaar’s piezoelectric drop-on-demand technology, the printheads deliver 40pl drops at up to 8kHz. A lightweight alloy cover and nozzle guard are said to provide the necessary durability for demanding production environments.

The printheads will jet Cima NanoTech’s IJ-1000 conductive silver ink, which delivers adhesion to substrates including glass, polyimide, and PET film, and is available in production quantities. The XYMDS is said to offer simplified development of production processes for printed electronics.

Digital printing by piezoelectric inkjet is claimed to provide important cost and time savings over traditional electronics manufacturing methods. It increases flexibility by enabling the production of one-off prototypes, and quick turn and volume products. Increased compatibility with a much wider range of fluids and substrates for additional flexibility and cost savings in the future are also promised.
