'World's first' clear aseptic package

15 December 2005

Tetra Pak's new Tetra Wedge Aseptic Clear is believed to be the world's first high barrier, totally clear aseptic package, providing consumers with 100 per cent transparency to see the product, a patented barrier technology to protect the product, and aseptic processing which seals in taste and nutrition. The first commercial brand in the new pack has been introduced into the Mexican market by beverage company Jumex Nautix.

According to Tetra Pak, the Tetra Wedge Aseptic Clear allows for both high and low acid applications, making pouch style, shelf stable packaging a new possibility for the dairy and soy industries. Aseptic processing opens up new formulation potential not currently possible through hot fill processing, the company states. In addition, the 6.75oz size and shape of the package are said to make it ideal for children's beverages.

In comparison to Tetra Pak's aseptic carton packaging, Tetra Wedge Aseptic Clear's proprietary barrier technology replaces the paperboard and aluminum foil with PET SiOx, which provides the same oxygen barrier. The material is moisture resistant and insensitive to humidity, and claimed to be 80 per cent more puncture resistant than other stand-up-pouches. Environmentally, it is billed as a best in class source reduced package; operationally, it offers reduced energy and water consumption versus hot fill.

Suitable applications for the Tetra Wedge Aseptic Clear include flavoured waters, sports beverages, liquid electrolytes, juices, dairy and soy drinks, and nectars.

Following its successful introduction in Mexico, Tetra Pak will make the technology commercially available in the USA in 2006.
