Ultra-high barrier film offers lower cost alternative to foil based laminates

6 November 2014

Flexi FoilFree HB is a new ultra-high barrier film technology from Ampac that, when incorporated in a laminate, "can achieve moisture, oxygen and vapour barrier properties approaching aluminum foil laminates without the use of foil".

Flexi FoilFree HB barrier laminates are said to provide excellent product performance characteristics compared with traditional thin gauge foils. Flex-crack and puncture resistance properties are, says Ampac, significantly improved in Flexi FoilFree HB composites when used in place of foil, while also providing easier 'tear open' properties over foil based substrates.

It is claimed that the new laminates provide a more sustainable alternative to foil based materials. Packaging has improved yield and is lighter weight versus comparable foil substrates, yielding lower greenhouse gases and requiring less energy consumption in manufacturing and distribution, the company states.

Packaging produced with Flexi FoilFree HB film is also said to retain its defined appearance even after processing and handling, "eliminating the shop-worn appearance that is typical with foil based packaging".

Dave Bartish, Ampac's vice president of marketing promises: "Flexi FoilFree HB based laminates provide an excellent alternative to more costly aluminum foil composites, with the added benefits of increased puncture and flex crack resistance, as well as improved package appearance and sustainability.
