UK waste database progress

11 August 2006

Following the recent announcement on the first phase of the development of the UK’s National Waste Database project, the results of the Q2 reprocessor returns are said to show the system is now being widely adopted as the preferred and easiest route to supply the necessary data.

Says Lorraine Lockhart, director of software developer Solution 7: “ All the feed-back to date has demonstrated that the system is user friendly, but like all new IT systems there are areas which require explanation and help. We are providing a first class help system and would encourage all those who have yet to try the system but feel unsure or uncertain of any element to contact the National Packaging Waste Database helpline on 08708 505801 or email support@npwd.org.uk . The system is there to make life easier for users and we are anxious to ensure it is as user-friendly as possible.”

Following analysis and assessment of this phase, the project team will now be developing a proactive campaign to reach the 100 per cent target for Q3 reprocessor returns. As part of this activity, a series of roadshows are also planned with the Environment Agencies to enable all potential users to engage in workshops on the development and use of the system.

The producer module is still scheduled to be on time for the 2007 returns to be submitted to the agencies early next year.

Ian Dent, chief executive of The Packaging Federation, comments: “The PF is whole-heartedly behind this development as a ‘no-brainer’ to handle a large set of complex data. Without robust data being available we are often chasing shadows, and with a laissez-faire financial mechanism like PRNs to underpin the system, the access to up-to-date information is vital for effective and cost efficient functionality. This system is an essential part of that delivery mechanism. ”
