The Confederation of Paper Industries' preliminary statistics show that, despite announced mill closures removing capacity from the market, UK paper and board production in 2004 remained at 6.2Mt, a figure unchanged from 2003.
Overall consumption of paper and board rose to 12.7Mt, the main growth being in the graphics grades. The packaging sector remained, in general, flat and the tissue sector was relatively unchanged from 2003. Exports now represent 21 per cent of total UK paper and board production. Graphic grades did particularly well increasing by 5 per cent, whilst exports of packaging grades also rose by 4 per cent.
Exports of recovered paper surged to nearly 2.5Mt - a growth of 2Mt in just four years.
