This month sees the advent of new packaging film manufacturer in Europe, as Japan’s Toray Industries has decided to establish local production of its Torayfan high barrier metallized BOPP film here.
The company is to invest some $100M in the construction of a new production facility, with metallization capabilities at the same site as its Toray Plastics Europe (TPEu) polyester film manufacturing base in in Rhône-Alpes, France. The new Toray Films Europe, (TFE) It is due to start operations in April, 2010, with an annual BOPP film capacity of 20,000t plus 22,000t of metallization.
US based Toray Plastics (America) will drive the development and commercialization of the new company’s film technology and help establish it as a core production base in Europe. The US operation will then continue to develop new value added high oxygen barrier and high moisture barrier film advances for TFE.
In addition to serving North American markets, Toray Plastics (America) exports its products throughout the world, including Europe. Increasing demand, especially in eastern Europe and Russia, made it apparent that Toray Industries could capitalize on this growth opportunity by tapping the US operation’s knowledge and experience.
It will also use the technologies and expertise of the TPEu operation to ensure a smooth launch of the Torayfan business in Europe.
