Sun Chemical chose IPEX to launch a range of packaging inks for the sheetfed offset market that are designed to prevent or limit dramatically the migration of chemicals from the inks within the barriers of a food pack.
Suncure ULM low migration UV curing products are based on the company’s patented M-cure technology (used for the Solarcat flexo inks launched during Labelexpo last year). John Adkin, project director for Sheetfed/UV Inks Europe said that beta testing was now complete and that the inks were fully available in Europe. “We will be gradually rolling out the range around the world.”
The technology replaces traditional photoinitiators used in existing UV systems with initiators that become locked into the cured ink matrix and so prevent migration, claims Sun. These products significantly reduced the risk of migration and do not use benzophenone or ITX. The Suncure ULM series are “low migration, low odour and low taint inks and are fast curing, have good adhesion across a wide range of substrates and are foil blockable”. A full range of Suncure coatings is available to complete the low migration package.
The second low migration quality (LMQ) ink system shown by Sun is specially formulated Irocart LMQ, which, when used with an appropriate coating, is also said to reduce significantly the risk of migration into food. Under strict testing packaging printed with the inks shows no ink oil in the packaged content claims Sun. Process colours and a mixing system are available, together with suitable fount additives and a specially developed water-based coating. This package for conventional offset printing can be used on a wide range of substances, adds the company.
