Study shows big two up

6 October 2003

Europe's €9.2 billion converted flexible packaging market is examined in a new study by packaging research firm PCI Films Consulting. It identifies Russia & Turkey as rising stars, with annual growth rates of 14 and 8 per cent, respectively (eclipsing the previous growth leaders Spain, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic). Amcor and Alcan together now control nearly 30 per cent of the market following a series of mergers and acquisitions (up from 12 per cent in 2000). End use markets such as fresh fruit and vegetable packaging, and retort pouches are both currently enjoying double-digit growth rates far in excess of the European average of 2.2 per cent.

PCI's Paul Gaster notes: "Against a backdrop of over-capacity and intense competition the European flexible packaging market continues to be dynamic and innovative. The leading players are getting bigger primarily through acquisition and this looks set to continue. Beyond the rising stars highlighted here there are more opportunities across other sectors and end use applications if you know where to look."
