Stratus improves quality of diecut blanks

25 September 2009

After more than six months of in-depth testing, the Stratus Group, in West Chester, Ohio, has given the ‘thumbs’ up’ to AVT’s PrintVision/Orion 100% automatic inspection system for folding carton, single pack applications. The US company was the first beta site for the Orion, which AVT launched at drupa 2008.

Stratus is using the system to automatically inspect individual diecut package blanks for one of its pharmaceutical clients. The Orion is installed post press and die cutting, inspecting each package prior to gluing. Orion operates around the clock on a 24/5 basis and literally inspects millions of packages.

Curt Curran, vice-president of Stratus Group, says: “We are receiving excellent results from AVT’s system. We inspect for colour, registration, type and die cutting. Our client’s packaging often has small print and we must be confident that the type is in place and readable. The speed of Orion is truly impressive, but what really counts is that this 100% automatic system totally eliminates the human error factor. Any pieces that are not consistent with our strict quality criteria are simply ejected.

“Our clients are very pleased with our quality control initiatives. Since installing the Orion system, our delivery of millions of packages shows zero defects.”
