Stephen Ellis (1937 – 2020)

7 September 2020

Pioneer and founder of polypropylene film manufacturer and converter Viking Packaging, Stephen Ellis has died aged 83.

Viking began manufacture of specialist films (some incorporating a special micro perforating technique) in 1969 for what were then the niche markets of bread, vegetables and textiles. The company reached a turnover of £17M in 1986 and went public that year. Stephen remained as Chairman of the business up to its acquisition by Bowater (Rexam). It was later purchased by Amcor.

He was always an ambitious entrepreneur, never afraid to take bold decisions. Much admired and respected by employees, customers and suppliers alike, he retained a lively interest in the packaging industry throughout his life.
