Starpack judges named

16 January 2008

The judging panel for the Starpack Industry Awards 2008 is headed by Heinz, Morrison, Coors, Design Bridge and PI3 Design, supported by experts from all parts of the packaging supply chain.

Head of Judges Steve Kelsey, strategic innovations director, PI3 Design, says: “We want to ensure the standards needed to achieve an award are as high as possible – to ensure all participants recognize that to win an award you must have truly achieved excellence. The judging process is integral to attaining these aims.”

Environmental considerations are of paramount importance across all categories and judges will assess how entrants demonstrate how they have sought to optimize or minimize packaging. At the same time, packs must be “fit for purpose” and deliver the product to consumers undamaged; product integrity and durability must be maximized.

Entrants are also asked to give consideration to closed loop thinking; refills; the sustainable sourcing of materials and the incorporation of recycled content in packaging materials which, even in combination, are capable of being recycled.

The Consumer Judging Panel is: Roy Dixon, consultant, RDA Consultants, formerly of Marks & Spencer; Lina Mistry, packaging technologist, H J Heinz Frozen & Chilled Foods; Clare Bates, packaging manager, Wm Morrison Supermarkets; Tony Woods, director, MPMA; and Nick Verebelyi, board director 3D branding and design, Design Bridge.

Specialist judge for Best Cosmetics and Toiletries Design is Patrick Poitevin, a consultant, with 30 years’ experience in the personal care, food and drinks industry. Specialist judge of the Environment category is Wayne Cartwright, senior packaging development and innovation manager, Coors Brewers.

The Transit Panel comprises: chair, Ray Pipe, principal engineer, Royal Mail; Phil Garvey, consultant, formerly with Perseco, Nestlé, Dalgety, Mayr-Melnhof and Cow & Gate / Nutricia; and Ray Roberts, consultant, Link R3, and formerly a global director of procurement for a $2B international engineering group. Charles Curtis until recently head of packaging development, Thornton’s, is a specialist judge.

The closing date for Starpack entries is January 31, 2008.

The Starpack Industry Awards 2008 are organized by IOP: The Packaging Society in partnership with our sister magazine Packaging Today. The awards presentations, gala dinner and cabaret will take place at the Café Royal, in London, on May 22, 2008..
