Spooler winds up time

28 January 2005

To cut downtime, Portuguese tape converter Tecnofita has installed a system said to offer a simple and cost effective way of converting tapes wound as individual pancake reels to a traverse wound spool.

According to supplier Alpha Converting, the compact, free standing AlphaSpool unit produces package lengths up to 50 times more than on pancake reels, enabling converters to supply their customers with a much better package. Alpha says this simple change will increase run times and output from production lines – "with fewer reel changes, an end user's machine downtime will be reduced significantly and plant efficiency noticeably improved".

With the compact, free standing AlphaSpool unit, different spooling patterns can be programmed and stored as recipes through an operator touchscreen. Its tension control is said to ensure that tapes will wind accurately at high speed, without damage during transfer from the tension loop on to the rewind.
