Sonoco shutting plants

Sonoco is to close its flexible packaging printing plant in Charlotte, NC, by the end of the first quarter of 2006. The property will be sold to a local real estate development firm.

The operation will be consolidated into other Sonoco flexible packaging facilities in the region and the 67 employees will be offered outplacement assistance.

The company will also be shutting its tube and core manufacturing plant in Chester, VA. The closure will be phased over the first half of 2006. This operation, employing 37 workers, will also be consolidated into other sites in the region.
