Smurfit Kappa Group names March, Cambridgeshire as its European Corrugator Plant of the Year

Smurfit Kappa's fully integrated corrugated packaging plant in March, Cambridgeshire has been named as the organisation's European Plant of the Year for 2014.

The Award considers and recognises all aspects of running and maintaining a technically complex environment, having scrutinised each location's sustainability performance, environmental record, health and safety awareness, commercial success as well as its customer feedback.

The 14.5 acre site at Hostmoor Avenue, March, produces its own corrugated sheetboard for printing, die-cutting and gluing all within the single site. Utilising the site's abilities, the plant manufactures high-quality printed packaging for some of the biggest FMCG customers in the country across the Retail Ready Packaging (RRP) and fresh produce sectors. The site has been the beneficiary of a multi-million pound 24-month investment programme culminating in the installation of one of Europe's most sophisticated HD flexographic printer and rotary die-cutters as well as a high-performance, multi-point gluer.

The plant is also home to one of the latest Smurfit Kappa's unique Experience Centres, where customers and packaging professionals come together from across the UK to unlock new opportunities and solve problems through innovative thinking. The Experience Centre in March is a neutral setting for the Smurfit Kappa team to collaborate with one another utilising the experience and ingenuity of the team, to create and develop bespoke concepts tailored specifically to their customer's requirements.

The site was chosen from Smurfit Kappa's 157 corrugated plants, sited from southern Spain to northern Norway and St Petersburg in the East.

On receiving the award from CEO Gary McGann on Friday, 17th April, Mike Fadden, Regional Director at the time said, "All the staff and personnel at the March site have worked extremely hard to install and commission equipment that is at the cutting edge of packaging technology. We are already delivering improved production efficiency and our customer centric approach means that our customers are immediately benefitting from our knowledge-based success."
