Drent Goebel is to supply a six-colour VSOP 1250 offset press to SCA Packaging, for its pre-print liner production facility in Cornuda, Italy. Delivery is planned for early autumn 2009, so that the press will have a print length of 1,680 mm - a new development for Drent Goebel.
SCA Italy chose web-fed printing over sheet-fed, which is the most commonly used technology. The press has six print towers, a Butler unwind and rewind splicers for continuous production, and Eltromat Corecon and Web video 3000 systems. The curing system is still to be decided.
The new press will be used to produce wine and liquor boxes, and boxes for consumer electronics. These come in many shapes and sizes, for which the VSOP’s sleeve concept fits perfectly with the demands from SCA.
Drent Goebel engineers are currently redesigning the machine for the 66 in sleeves. Major changes have to be made to the ink train, dampening system and sleeve handling system. With this print length the average weight of a sleeve will be around 130 kg.
An investigation into possibilities for wider web widths concluded that the ideal print size would be 1,700 mm width x 1,700 mm cut-off.
