Siemens drives forward

20 April 2006

Drives, automation and control systems are frequently the silent secret behind successful equipment. At IPEX specialist Siemens Automation and Drives presented its Simotion/Sinamics for printing and converting applications. With the principle of putting “intelligence into the drives” the company says its Simotion D (drive based) brings the world of automation and drives together.

The company has developed an electrical combination drive for offset presses. The motor combines rotary and linear movements in a single housing - replacing mechanical answers comprising motor and gears. The rotor of a synchronous motor is moved axially with a linear motor.

The combination drive is controlled with a servo converter of the Sinamics S120 series. This makes the control identical with that of the linear drives of shaftless printing machines, allowing “problem free integration” of the combination drive.

In the May issue Converting Today will feature a case study showing how a switch to a Siemens motion control system has made Rotoflex label die cutting equipment more precise.
