Siegwerk to acquire SICPA packaging ink business

17 June 2005

The Siegwerk Group is to acquire SICPA's packaging ink division for an undisclosed sum. With net sales of €613M, Siegwerk will become the world's second largest manufacturer of packaging ink. The deal is expected to receive regulatory approval from the anti trust authorities during the summer.

It will be the second major acquisition in the printing ink industry within a few months. It follows the acquisition of the ink divisions of BASF and ANI by investment company CVC Capital Partners, and their merger to form new company Xsys (see Inks and Adhesives feature, this issue).

"The acquisition is a major step towards the group consolidating its worldwide presence and positioning as a global player," declared Siegwerk president and ceo Herbert Forker. "We can now supply globally operating converters as well as national clients in every country in the world, and support them in application engineering. This also makes us an interesting partner for the major brand companies."

The group is well positioned in central and eastern Europe, North Africa, South East Asia, and the USA. SICPA's Packaging Ink Division will complement this with its strong presence in southern Europe, Turkey, Scandinavia and Russia, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, South America, China, India, and Australia. On the product side, Siegwerk's expertise in film and foil printing, paper labels, and wallpaper printing will be expanded by SICPA's knowhow in tobacco packaging, foil labels, and the corrugated board sector.

SICPA will now focus on its security inks and systems businesses. For over 70 years the company has supplied security inks for the majority of the world's banknotes. The Product Security business has a strong position in the field of protecting products, for both governments and brand owners, against the risks of counterfeiting and fraud.
