Foster Packaging has opened what it claims to be the first dedicated short run flexible packaging facility in the UK and Ireland. Based in County Louth, Ireland, the new Flexible Express service will use an HP Indigo press ws4500 and specialised pouch machinery to focus on the production of pouches, digitally printed film and bags.
Aiming to support “more cost effective product launches”, the service can be used for either local and regional campaigns, as Foster will be able to produce from one to 10,000 pouches at one go. Retailers will also be able to promote a number of products on one pack for limited periods.
Joe Foster, managing director of Foster Packaging, comments: “We recently participated in the IFE 09 Exhibition in London where there was tremendous interest in our Flexible Express service. From the feedback received there seems to be a strong potential for digitally printed pouches and bags and the definite need for short run packaging. During a downturn companies look for new ways to market themselves and digitally printed short run packaging is a great way to do that.”
Operations director Paul Young adds: “The quality of digital printing for packaging is something we're very aware of as suppliers of gravure printed products There are other benefits to digital printing that are important in these challenging times: reduced stockholding, less substrate waste during printing, less printed waste because you only print what you need, shorter times to market, no cylinder/plate costs and the advantages of variable data printing.”
