Sheet print costs offset

27 January 2006

New OnePass technology from OFT is said to enable many of the embellishments of offset printed sheets to be created more easily than by traditional methods - with low capital investments and in a single pass on the press.

Two OnePass products have been launched. The Foiltone process allows foil to be applied to the sheet within the printing process, without dies or heat. As the foil is printed in place it is possible to achieve most of the printing styles possible with ink, including full sheet solids, small reverse-outs and half tones. The overprinting of the foil allows special effects to be created and every colour of foil to be produced on a single sheet using only silver foil.

The module can be fitted to most presses in the 74 and 105 format range, positioned anywhere on the press depending on the desired finished effect. The system allows for a specially formulated cold foil adhesive to be printed onto the sheet substrate on the first unit using a standard litho plate. Cold foil is applied at the second unit and adheres to the adhesive in the printed pattern with high resolution, including a range of half tones and full solid coverage.

The Flitone OnePass process allows flitter to be applied to the printed sheet during printing at normal production speeds. One of the coating units on a UV enabled press is converted to an anilox roller unit with a specially designed chambered doctor blade system. OFT can supply a special coating to achieve the required finish. It is applied to the sheet by the anilox and dried by the UV system.
