Sharp at the cutting edge

21 July 2008

A recent development from Hudson-Sharp is the NTR 800 roll to roll machine for production of net/printed PE film for VFSS packaging of fruit and vegetables. High efficiency levels, minimum downtime and ease of operation are claimed.

This machine slits a printed web of LDPE/MDPE film into three bands then seals these to two rolls of LDPE/HDPE 300 micron net. The resulting film is said to be growing in popularity as a packaging medium for such products as potatoes, onions, carrots, nuts and certain fruits.

With the NTR 800 it is possible to produce finished net/printed film product at a speed up to 120 m/min. The patent applied for sealing technology on the machine enables constant seal strength at varying machine speeds.

In another development, Hudson-Sharp’s model 5750 W wicket machine can be equipped with a WASP (wicket automation stack processor) module for automatically removing the finished bag stacks from the machine conveyor and transferring them to an inspection conveyor.

Already being used in North America and Australia, the WASP unit is said to allow the machine to run at optimum speeds, offers the potential to reduce labour costs and reduces the risk of operators experiencing the effects of repetitive strain injury.

A patented feature retains the bags together through the wicket holes rather than by simple clamping. This allows more bags to be transferred per stack with less risk of them being lost or distorted. The unit can also be adapted to apply wicket wires and/or plugs, grommets, front and back boards, and eventual boxing.

The model 5750 W is said to be capable of producing bags with tight tolerances at up to 450/min
