Shaft specialist meets demand

11 July 2008

Neuenhauser Vorwald reports increased demand from the paper and tissue industries. The German company recently received an order for seven traveling shaft pullers and 84 heavy duty air operated mechanical shafts.

The shaft puller consists of a machine bed with linear guides and a travelling machine stand mounted on the bed. A shaft clamping plate is attached to the travelling stand. When a finished reel is placed in front of the shaft puller, the machine stand moves forward, locating the end of the expanding shaft, clamping onto its journal and pulling it from the reel in one smooth movement.

This is said to minimise wear on the shafts.

The reel of finished material is then moved, a new core is fitted to the expansion shaft and the unit moves forward to place the shaft on supports behind the production machine, ready for the shaft to be reloaded.

The Neuenhauser air operated mechanical shafts, typically 4m in overall length with a diameter of 250mm, are designed with a high load bearing capability for heavy reels. They have a hydraulic booster for high torque transmission, concentric core clamping for high web speeds, and journals designed to customer requirements.

In response to customer requests, a new feature gives the ability to replace the gripping lugs without having to strip down the whole shaft.

The shaft design is also claimed to lend itself to minimum maintenance.
