Sensor Products tool to improve maintenance

24 September 2007

Sigma-Nip, Sensor Products’ second generation electronic sensor and software diagnostic maintenance tool for measuring nip width, is claimed to speed up and make more accurate the routine maintenance of roller alignment and roller crowning. Its sensors are deployed right on the nip surface, giving instantaneous real-time feedback on nip condition.

The sensors, which are linked on a plastics carrier sheet, can measure and detect nip width at up to 30 discreet points across the cross direction. The company says they are more durable and can be easily dispersed across the nip by just one person.

The highly refined, Microsoft Vista compliant software is also more robust, allowing for comparative analysis and detailed adjustments while the sensor is in the closed (non rotating) nip.

Sensor Products says the Sigma-Nip is extremely lightweight and portable: it can be quickly carried and used throughout the plant to align roller sets. It connects through a wireless connection or USB port to any Windows based laptop or tablet.

Tolerating pressures of up to 211kg/cm2 that make it potentially usable on calendar rolls, the tool is mainly intended to help minimize mill downtime, avoid costly web breaks, and extend cover life.
