Bespoke envelope printer SEM has installed a new five-colour Komori Lithrone S40 and coater at new premises, which have helped increase capacity four-fold.
The 40,000sq ft site, in Spondon, Derbyshire, is part of a £3m investment that included the replacement of an older Lithrone 40. The S40 is being used to print flat sheet conversion envelopes with an average run length of 75,000 on various stock thicknesses, in one to five or six colours.
SEM is part of the Hamelin Group and with sister companies Surrey Envelopes Ltd and Envelope Sales PLC is a major supplier of envelopes in the UK. The LS40 has increased automation to enable faster makereadies and cut costs, which has boosted weekly production to more than 15 million.
General manager Howard Sadler says: “Customer demand is moving toward more specialist designs in smaller quantities. Savings on paper have been substantial, makeready times have fallen dramatically as the press is linked to the new CTP system and press speed has also increased substantially.”
