Retort pouches can be reclosed

16 June 2004

Reclosable retort packaging will debut in retail stores throughout the USA this month. Blue Star Food Products has chosen the 1 lb Zip'n Store reclosable pouch developed by Pyramid Flexible Packaging and Presto Products for distribution of six varieties of its crabmeat.

The Zip'n Store pouch is said to deliver all the benefits of retort packaging with the added advantage of an exclusive zipper design that allows consumers to use only the amount of product they need — reducing waste, ensuring freshness, and eliminating the need for storage containers for leftovers. Details of the new technology are restricted, but Pyramid is offering pre-made pouches in three-side seal and stand-up formats, with die cut handles and contoured shapes.

"Until now, zippers could not be incorporated into retort packages due to the extreme temperatures demanded by the retort process," comments Dean Hoss, Pyramid's president. "The sturdy, heat resistant Zip'n Store package can also be used in the microwave (non foil structure) and as a boil-in bag for cooking and reheating food products."
