REACHReady director Jo Lloyd has urged companies who buy substances, metals, preparations and alloys from an EU source to talk to their suppliers and check they have pre-registered for the REACH regulation by December 1. The suppliers have until that date to pre-register their products with the European Chemicals Agency. Companies that have failed to do so will not be able to continue to supply that product, as they will not be REACH compliant until they undertake the highly complex and costly full registration process.
"Even though pre-registration is in its final stages, the REACHReady helpdesk is getting daily calls from suppliers who have only just found out about REACH and need our help to understand what to do,” Jo Lloyd said. “We fully expect to receive the same calls for help from December 2 and beyond, when it will be too late to pre-register and benefit from up to 11 years’ grace to register products.
“This will inevitably lead to business continuity issues for the company concerned and its supply chain. That said, REACHReady is already working with companies that have fully completed pre-registration and are preparing to tackle the next stages of REACH - when the real work begins!”
REACHReady, a Chemical Industries Association subsidiary set up to help companies deal with the REACH regulation, has posted draft letters for free access on its website for companies to send both to their suppliers and customers following the close of pre-registration.
