Protesting plastics price swings

12 November 2003

Plastics film industry leaders from eight major European countries met in the recent PlastEurofilm Assembly, in Paris, to debate the issues that bring "inequity and instability" to their businesses and markets. Dick Searle, chairman of the Packaging and Industrial Films Association, and executive chairman of the Britton Group, concluded the assembly with a plea for greater stability in polymer prices across the globe.

"There can be no sound excuse for the wild fluctuations we are experiencing in the prices paid for raw material and the underlying inequity between such prices here in Europe and, for example, in the Far East," he said. "This puts European industry at a severe disadvantage over our global competitors."

Calling for a closer relationship between the industry and material suppliers, he concluded: "We are significant customers and I would hope that the time has come to be treated as such".
