Protecting pills against counterfeiting

18 November 2005

Digital security printing specialist AlpVision and Constantia Flexible Packaging have integrated AlpVision's Cryptoglyph anti counterfeiting technology into blister foil packaging production lines. Now each pill is protected in its individual blister pocket by an invisible digital security feature.

According to the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations, seven per cent of all drugs sold around the world are counterfeit. This represents more than $30 billion in lost revenue – apart from the health consequences in using poor quality or wrong dosages of the active ingredient.

"It was amazing to see a standard gravure printing line produce protected blister foils," says Thomas Ullrich, Constantia's project manager R&D. "The rapid and seamless integration of the Cryptoglyph technology with our standard blister foil production line was a very important factor, as no modification of the packaging design was necessary. The invisibility of Cryptoglyph adds a dramatic improvement, enabling us to authenticate our pharmaceutical products."

Accoprding to AlpVision, millions of products are already protected with Cryptoglyph worldwide. It is said to be the only technology that enables printing an invisible mark with a visible ink, and can be printed on standard equipment.
