Progress in package proofing

18 April 2006

At IPEX, CGS Publishing Technologies demonstrated a powerful new proofing device for packaging applications involving clear film and other substrates. Using the Mimaki UJF-605R UV inkjet printer, seen in Europe for the first time, the company showed how its ORIS technology can create contract quality proofs on production substrates.

Accurate proofing on clear substrates is a critical, and previously unavailable component of flexo and gravure packaging workflow, the company states, while the ORIS driven Mimaki system is also suitable for short run production of labels. In the demonstration, the device’s white printing and full colour capabilities were controlled by CGS’ ORIS Color Tuner colour proofing and workflow system. The demos were on clear film, although the UJF-605R can also print on a wide variety of materials, up to 2mm thick.

The Mimaki UJF-605R is abile to mix and print Titanium Dioxide based white ink in a UV curable inkjet environment. It can print white on a variety of clear and non white materials, including foil and untreated plastics, with an image area of 23.4 x 19.5in, with printing resolutions of up to 1,200 x 2,400dpi and speeds up to 33ft2/hour.

ORIS Package Pro is a new proofing and colour workflow bundle for all types of package printing, including gravure, flexo and offset. It incorporates ORIS Color Tuner 5.2 with Gretag Macbeth’s new ProfileMaker 5 Packaging software. Providing packaging printers with a hot folder based approach to proofing, it includes the ability to manage proofing of multiple spot or custom colours.

CGS also revealed at the show that Matthews Packaging Graphics, has selected ORIS Color Tuner as the standard proofing environment in all of its facilities in the USA.
