Precision slitting

27 March 2006

For the positioning of the slitting system for paper and medical film on its Elite Cameron machines, TS Converting uses a HepcoMotion SBM GV3 slide with integral supports. The Hepco system features a precision measurement device and laser source.

“Any deflection in the shaft would be amplified on the position of the laser beam compromising slitting accuracy,” explains TS design engineer Rob Snell. “The beam and double row bearings are also robust enough to withstand the rigours of the industry.”

One of many options available within Hepco’s GV3 linear motion system, the slide specified by TS is double edged and its carriage plate carrying the measuring elements is moved manually. The load on the carriage is less than 1kg.

Although smooth movement is essential, some friction is required to prevent the carriage overrunning and to give the operator some ‘feel’ for setting the alignment of knives for the slitting process. For this purpose, the linear system bearings were supplied pre-loaded. It was also fitted with cap wipers that in addition to introducing an element of friction keep the guideway free from ingress of paper dust.

“The V guide principle central to this system gives us excellent reliability,” Rob Snell concludes. “This supported unit was easy to install and has proven to be simple to service.”
