Over 120 leading European manufacturers and suppliers of flexible packaging materials were contacted about their views on the market for Pira's new report 'The Future of Global Flexible Packaging Markets'. Global demand for flexible packaging was 12Mt in 2004 and is forecast to grow to over 16Mt by 2010, according to the study.

"Central and eastern Europe enjoys the highest growth potential within Europe," it confirms. "Russia, Poland and Turkey account for 80 per cent of the total market for flexible packaging used within the central and eastern European market. Russia is the largest consumer of flexible packaging materials in this market, with consumption forecast to reach 260,000t by 2010.

"The UK is Europe's largest flexible packaging market, and is forecast to remain so with a 21.6 per cent market share in 2010. "Flexible packaging sales in China are forecast to be €3.8 billion in 2010 - a volume of 1.7Mt.

"The food sector will continue to dominate the use of flexible materials, but there is evidence of a slow down in the more traditional areas of use, such as fruit and vegetables, fresh meats, fish, and poultry. Confectionery will hold the largest market share of 12.9 per cent in 2010.

"PE films are the flexible packaging material in greatest demand. The annualized rate of growth for the period 2005 to 2010 is estimated at 3.5 per cent to yield a total volume of 1.361Mt of demand in 2010."
