Schreiner MediPharm has developed a manufacturing process for pharmaceutical labels which, the company claims, ensures that each individual label is delivered at a 100 per cent level of quality, eliminating the risk of contamination. Schreiner's production process uses advanced imaging systems said to guarantee the integrity of the printed image, precision fit and, above all, cleanliness.
Preference is given to self adhesive films lined with a transparent silicone coated polyester film. This enables the adhesion coated material web to be inspected through the reverse side. Another risk analysis is performed with regard to selecting the appropriate printing techniques. Screen printing is said to be the best suited technology for this purpose, as it ensures that the same quantity of ink is used throughout the entire printing run.
The ink formula is generated by a high precision computer. The finished mixture is then compared with the reference sample until there is no more difference discernible by the human eye.
During the final inspection process pharmaceutical labels are subjected to a special treatment at Schreiner MediPharm. Personnel working in a segregated cleanroom wear protective garments and caps to prevent hair or clothing fibres from coming into contact with the material web. During an initial inspection of the printed labels on a reel with multiple webs, a high resolution image processing system performs a quality check. It detects any non conformities, and these labels are removed from the master reel prior to cutting of the individual reels.
This is followed by a second inspection of the individual label reels, during which each label is significantly magnified once more and inspected by the image processing system. This is said to reveal even extremely small deviations. After each machine stop, the material web is retracted to pass through the camera inspection once more. The result, according toSchreiner MediPharm, is a 100 per cent guarantee that labels, if necessary, have been properly exchanged and accurately positioned.
Schreiner MediPharm supplies labels to European manufacturers who export to Japan, as well as directly supplying to the Japanese market. It is represented in Japan by a company "which only accepts absolute quality suppliers". Each shipment represents a test, the company states, adding: "We have been successfully passing these tests for two years".
