Paper made from bran

4 February 2014

Working together, Italian paper manufacturer Favini and Barilla, one of the country's largest food companies, have created Cartacrusca - the first paper to be made from bran residues that can no longer be used for human consumption.

Following its experience with the Crush range of ecological papers made from agro-industrial waste, Favini teamed up with Barilla, which has been looking for ways to make better use of its by-products, and bran in particular.

The result is Cartacrusca (Italian for 'paper from bran'). It contains 17% of bran residues, replacing cellulose and filler materials to produce high quality paper which, instead of being wasted, is used for all Barilla's corporate communications.

Cartacrusca is currently produced in two grammages: 250g, which is ideal for cards book covers, shopping bags and similar applications; and 100g for notebooks papers, letterhead and print publications.
