Packaging that speaks several languages

"Cutting edge products and product innovation are of tremendous importance for a modern packaging company," said Mondi Packaging ceo Peter J Oswald, as the much expanded Vienna headquartered company announced new ideas in bags, corrugated and flexibles during interpack.

An industrial paper sack with a construction that creates additional printable space, the World Bag is said to offer a cost efficient solution that reduces the amount of packaging variations by providing surface space for more than 18 languages on one bag. This is achieved with an extra printed sheet attached to the outer surface of the pack in the bag making process. To see the inner information the outer natural kraft ply can easily be opened along the perforation and the print read just like a page in a book. This way the sack is easy to handle and the inner ply still protects the product, says the company.

Commented deputy ceo Bag Division Armand Schoonbrood: "Actually you can have four or five sides of information unfolding if needed and a leaflet can be inserted during manufacture between the outer and inner material." World Bag is seen as the answer to a steadily increasing demand for more information on packaging. Ingredients lists, usage instructions, cautions, environmental regulations and the need for texts in various languages make it difficult to fit everything on the surface of standard bags that normally fit a maximum of five languages.

Up to now transparent windows were mainly a feature of consumer bags or on industrial multi ply paper bags at a high cost.

Now Mondi Packaging has developed a special method of attaching a longitudinal stripe of thick gauge PE to a paper sack in a cost effective way. The process is understood to be "somewhere between gluing and sealing". Bags capable of holding up to 35kg can be produced, says the company. Variations in print can be minimised since product differentiation can be achieved through the window.

"The Window Bag was launched in Germany at the beginning of this year and already some 10M sacks have been sold into the animal feed sector," reported Armand Schoonbrood.
