Optima refurbishes Renolit’s press

27 September 2011

Drives and controls specialist Optima Control Solutions has completed a full systems upgrade on a crucial gravure press in just two weeks for a major international manufacturer of plastics films.

Optima was tasked by Renolit Cramlington to refurbish the control system on the 5-colour Cerutti press at its plant in Cramlington, UK, during the machine's scheduled downtime for maintenance. The press is vital in the manufacture of decorative laminates and any interruption to the printing operation would affect the whole production line at the factory.

Optima's previous experience of refurbishing Cerutti press control systems was a key factor in Renolit's decision to choose it to carry out this critical task. It was the first time Renolit had used the company, but the decision paid off as the refurbishment was completed within the two-week deadline and on budget.

Renolit's engineering project and maintenance manager John Milne confirms: "It was a tricky project and the pressure was on them to get the machine up and running as soon as possible. Optima did a great job. They coped really well and I would certainly use them again."

To improve the performance of Renolit's press, Optima replaced the original machine control system with Siemens Sinamics DCM DC drive controllers, a Siemens S7-400 PLC and et-200 i/o units. It also installed a Siemens WinCC Flexible HMI package.
