Omet synchronizes sheet cutting

28 June 2006

New from Omet is a device said to substantially reduce sheeting times by cutting different sizes without altering machine set-up. The Fly Cut has been installed on an Omet Varyflex in the USA, where it is said to be achieving excellent results.

The Fly Cut allows printed material to be sheeted in different sizes, from 6-33in through a single unit. But unlike traditional sheeting systems, there is no need to change the set-up to suit the format. The new device is said to handle a wide range of materials, from 60g/m2 paper to 600 micron board, without affecting the performance or productivity of the printing line.

Operated by an independent motor, it is made up of two rotating cylinders with special blades that cut the sheet using a synchronized scissor motion, with blade penetration during the cut. Synchronization of the cutting cylinders is guaranteed by a set of spiral tooth gears positioned on both control and operator sides.

According to Omet: “The advantages are remarkable both in quality and production cost savings. Quality is assured because Fly Cut produces a cleanly cut sheet, free of dust, and without any skewed edges. On shorter formats the machine leaves no rips or tears, while on longer formats, there are none of the blockages typically associated with this type of sheeting. The cut is always perfectly square without any adjustment to the cutting angle.”

Key to the system is the cutting phase, which is synchronized with the speed of the web, and lasts for around 30-40s. This allows the cylinders, in the remaining space, to accelerate or decelerate in order to resurface in the cutting phase for any size setting.

The different operating speeds required to cut different format lengths are set by the software, which also controls the cylinder speeds, synchronizing them with the external speed of the web at the point when the cut takes place. Omet says that the novel shape of the cross cutters guarantees a longer than average life cycle.
