No to bag tax

2 December 2002

The UK's recently formed Carrier Bag Consortium of manufacturers and distributors is campaigning against a threatened tax on consumers using plastics carriers at supermarket checkouts and in high street shops.

In addition to lobbying politicians, the CBC has launched a website to help people understand why there are no sound environmental reasons for the introduction of a tax. It also argues the case against preferential treatment of paper bags and the "wasteful use of resources" in biodegradable plastics bags.

The consortium also claims the much publicized "success" of a tax in Ireland has been greatly exaggerated.
