New translucent, compostable PLA

22 May 2008

FKuR Kunststoff, of Willich, Germany has collaborated with the Fraunhofer Institute Umsicht, Oberhausen, to develop and manufacture a translucent, compostable, versatile polylactic acid (PLA) resin called Bio-Flex 467F. The advantages of this new formulation are related to the myriad application opportunities. It is claimed that the PLA can be easily processed on standard, unmodified, polyethylene blown film lines.

Bio-Flex 467F is said to exhibit high mechanical resistance and good elongation, with properties comparable to high density polyethylene. It combines a silk-matt gloss with high transparency. The material can be co-extruded with other Bio-Flex compounds to obtain required levels of rigidity, elasticity and tear resistance. Nearly 40 per cent

of Bio-Flex 467F is manufactured from renewable resources and it is food contact certified. The material is also registered as a compostable plastics, according to EN 13432 at DIN Certco. The product is available in cellulose based Biograde types for injection moulding applications, and Bio-Flex types, based on PLA, for film applications.
